DANA in Valencia, Spain: Heartbreaking Figures That Tell a Sad Story

On October 29, 2024 the DANA (Spanish acronym for Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos, meaning “isolated depression at high levels”) devastated Valencia.

The more than two hundred people who perished in the floods are unquestionably the most heartbreaking aspect of this disaster, a horrific, inconceivable figure that would have seemed unthinkable months ago.

The catastrophe’s greatest manifestation is the loss of human life, but there are also significant social and economic consequences, such as homes, businesses, industries, automobiles, crops (more than 150,000) and public infrastructure (roads, railways, schools, health centers and hydraulic and electrical systems). The destruction has immobilized the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of people and crippled the Valencian economy as a whole.

The considerable extent of the damage is due to the substantial number of towns affected and the destruction of assets amassed over many years of investment. Ten percent of Valencia’s businesses are located in thirteen of the most severely affected towns, most of them in the county of l’Horta Sud. The business fabric in these towns is primarily made up of micro and small-sized businesses that play a significant role in employment and provincial GDP. For these businesses and others affected in the remaining seventy damaged municipalities to resume operations, direct public aid is needed to help them replace damaged assets as quickly as possible.

Insuralex asked the Albero Artesanos Association to produce a magnificent ceramic piece. The gift you are going to receive is an exclusive, sustainable, handmade, limited and numbered edition created for you and for this event. It will be delivered to all attendees at the end of the summit, just before the networking cocktail at the Albero Artesanos Association booth.

The unique design is a surprise and includes mud stains that serve as a reminder of the natural disaster. The piece symbolizes how society must come together to respond to natural disasters by supporting each other.

We are glad to share the letter by Pau Peris Raurell and Javier Vilalta Ibañez, president and vicepresident at Albero Artesanos Association:

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN RECOVERING FROM THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY DANA AT THE ALBERO ARTESANOS ASSOCIATION

We are writing on behalf of the Albero Artesanos Association, a non-profit organisation founded in 1999 and located in Aldaia, Valencia, Spain.

Our mission is to promote equal opportunities, social inclusion and accessibility for individuals with disabilities caused by serious mental illness. Since our inception, we have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those we serve through various programs and activities, including jewellery making, textile workshops, and ceramics workshops at the Dra. María Huertas Occupational Centres (C.O.).

Additionally, we run Terreta Conreada, a ceramics workshop and eco-agriculture program, with proceeds donated to the most disadvantaged members of our community. Our AASAM-assisted sheltered housing unit serves seven resident and our social kitchen provides meals to 55 individuals attending our workshops, playing a critical role in their rehabilitation and social integration. On 29th October 2024, Valencia, Spain, was severely impacted by an Isolated High-Level Depression (DANA), which caused extensive damage to our facilities, including the sheltered housing, social kitchen, jewellery workshop, and organic garden. These damages directly undermine our ability to provide essential services and daily support to our users.

To give you a clearer understanding of the situation, we have attached photographs showing the current state of our facilities after the DANA event.

The ceramic pieces ordered by Insuralex for the 2025 Insuralex Madrid International Insurance Summit will help us repair and restore our centres so we can continue our vital work. This assistance is crucial in ensuring that the individuals we serve can keep developing their skills and progressing toward a more independent life.
